Introduction
Digital Carnival Z strives to make the festival available for everyone to enjoy. Cinevolution understands that access needs are different for everyone and that these needs can also change every day. We will do our best to accommodate your needs before you even attend our programming. However, if there are additional accessibility needs, we will try our best to accommodate. For more information or specific requests, please contact Regan Shrumm, our Accessibility Coordinator, at 778-803-7150 extension 105 or regan@cinevolutionmedia.com.

3. Access Offerings
Digital Carnival Z includes two parts, the Online Festival Exhibition which includes 6 media artworks and a series of live zoom events, and the Featured Artist Exhibition at the Richmond Art Gallery. Access information for each component of the festival is outlined below.
Online Festival Exhibition
The Online Festival Exhibition includes six artworks, all of which are available on this website. Each artwork has its own set of accessibility offerings. Working closely with the artists, these accessibility offerings have been developed in consultation with the community, including individuals with disabilities and organizations focusing on disability services. In most cases, we offer Audio Description (AD), American Sign Language (ASL), Closed Captioning (CC) and Transcripts of the projects. A description of each access offering and the projects that they are available for are listed below.
3.1 Audio Description (AD)
Audio Description or AD describes the visual elements of a piece, often providing contextual information that allows listeners to enter a work more fully. We have provided audio description wherever possible to increase access for Blind and Partially Sighted audiences, as well as anyone who is not looking at their screen. All audio description included in the festival has been developed by or in consultation with the artists.
AD is available for the following projects. Use the links below to visit the individual project pages, where you will find audio described versions of the work along with other materials, such as audio introductions and transcripts.
- Reflection of ME
- NEW NORMAL: an embodied novel
- (un)important, today is
- Negev Varod/Seeing Pink
- Digital Exploration of the Expansion
- Let Me In
For an abridged experience, visit the Described Videos Playlist to view all audio described videos only.
3.2 ASL
ASL, or American Sign Language, is a language that allows Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals to not only understand any spoken language, but also understand how music and sounds also play into each piece. ASL is only one type of sign language, but there are many other ones that are used in different cultures and places, like LSQ or Quebecois sign language, or Black American Sign Language or BASL.
The following projects include ASL access. Visit the individual project pages to find ASL versions of the work along with other materials, such as transcripts.
- Reflection of ME, created in ASL by Black Deaf Queer artist Natasha Courage Bacchus
- NEW NORMAL: an embodied novel
- (un)important, today is
- Negev Varod/Seeing Pink
- Let Me In
For an abridged experience, visit the ASL Videos Playlist to view the ASL videos only.
3.3 Closed Captioning (CC)
Closed captions are synchronized on-screen text descriptions for videos that display dialogue, identify speakers, and describe other relevant sounds which are visible only when selected. Digital Carnival Z offers closed captioning for video artworks and recordings using YouTube’s closed captioning feature, so viewers can choose the font size, colour, and opacity they prefer. For help turning on captions, refer to the Access Guide or watch this YouTube video.
Closed Captioning is available for:
- Reflection of ME
- NEW NORMAL: an embodied novel
- (un)important, today is
- Negev Varod/Seeing Pink
- Digital Exploration of the Expansion
Closed captioning will also be available for all event recordings, which will be linked here once they are available.
3.4 Transcript
A transcript is a text version of the speech and non-speech audio information needed to understand material that was originally presented in another medium. Transcripts often also include visual information needed to understand the content. We have made transcripts available as downloadable Microsoft Word documents for all audio and video content. All transcripts for artworks were developed through close collaboration between artists, describers, and community consultants.
Transcripts are available for:
- Reflection of ME
- NEW NORMAL: an embodied novel
- (un)important, today is
- Negev Varod/Seeing Pink
- Digital Exploration of the Expansion
- Let Me In
Transcripts will also be available for video recordings of the Digital Carnival Z Virtual Festival Launch, Feminist Craft of Care for Times of Crisis, and Visionary Organizing on Social Media.

6. Website Accessibility
We are actively working to increase the accessibility and usability of our website for all people, and in doing so adhere to many of the available standards and guidelines.
This website endeavours to conform to level Double-A of the World Wide Web Consortium W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0. The WCAG guidelines were made to help make the internet more user friendly for everyone. Cinevolution recognizes that the WCAG does not address all needs. In fact the WCAG can even be problematic, such as the fact that you do not need to caption podcasts since they are not considered multimedia.
While we strive to adhere to the accepted guidelines and standards for accessibility and usability, it is not always possible to do so in all areas of the website. We are continuing to work on improving the website for screen reader users.
Access Control Button
On the upper right-hand corner of this website, beside the navigation menu, you will find a “universal access” icon, which when clicked will bring up a control panel that allows you to change some settings on this website. Namely:
- Reset Font Size: increase or decrease the font size
- Readable Font: change the font to a higher contrast and bolder one
- Underline Links: add underline links across the board
- Greyscale: change the images and text to greyscale
- Reset Settings: Turns all settings back to default (how they were)
We are continually seeking out solutions that will bring all areas of the site up to the same level of overall web accessibility. The site’s accessibility will be kept under ongoing review, and we welcome your input into this, especially if you are having any difficulties with accessing our content, or if the way it is presented could be made clearer. To do this, please send an email to regan@cinevolutionmedia.com or call 778-803-7150 ext. 105.
